HEM?

James Blackshaw - Cross http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIW_TeQj_ds 12 string complexity. Sound on this one is a bit muddy—get an album.

Now for my part, I think I'm not disinclined to that same kind of complexity, as long as it has the foundation of a strong melody (15:58:09) Four o'Swords: CF John Williams' soundtracks, and some of Matthew Sweet's “operatic” pieces

Gang Gang Dance - Afoot Really interesting half-rhythmic stuff with discord and broken lyrics. A lot of their stuff is kind of hip hop indie? Still clever and dropped beats.

DJ Sharpnel - Fast hinrg what? trance?

Blowzabella - lots of old instruments to make kind of folk stuff. Heard some lovely upbeat stuff.

British Sea Power - Slightly Coldplay. Like a rocky Fabulous Poodles. Some of their stuff is pretty good. Some of it is standard indie-vapid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2n-7K0Ef6Y

Four Tet - thrumming base and drums overlaid with clever stuff and electronic influence.

Jackson C Frank. Guitar and droning singing. Bit Bowie-on-a-guitar. Wrote(?) “My Name is Carnival”, which Erland & the Carnival covered. The original is good, too.

Mongolian throat singing?! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wHbIWH_NGc More the instrument, the morin khuur, and the repetitive sawing motion employed.

Steve Reich, Terry Reily: minimalist 60's, 70's music. Roger recommended it after hearing MELSA.

Robert Fripp (and Eno, of course): dad, after hearing Reich & MELSA.

Curved Air - Vivaldi

Mystery Jets: had that zootime thing and sounded cool. Punkish but melodic.

Post-rock

Do Make Say Think—slow build, no vocals. Is this a genre thing? Does no one ever sing?

Explosions in the Sky—nice slow build. no vocals. Good song: Song for our Fathers. F-A!

Other

In the 4th movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony: -Right after the third stanza/verse thing when everything just drops out, and the bass instruments come in, as if a march in the distance. -Right after the double fugue, that still moment right before the main theme comes back.

Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #2 in c minor: Opening When the piano gets triplets

The Communio in Mozart's Requiem, the beginning, when the soprano starts her solo is divine.

When the Aria returns in the Goldberg Variations, especially the 1984 Gould recording.

The entire Kunst der Fuge

Smetana's Moldau, when the theme first appears

Fruehlingsrauschen by Sinding. Also the entire song.

Squarepusher - Good glitch. Like Aphex Twin. This track is outstanding: Tetra-Sync http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8KspEq14CYQ

Prokofiev's 2nd piano conerto, 3rd movement. From about 5:39 onward is just pure awesome for me.

Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence. Around 4:02

The climax starting around 7:30 in is just amazing. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=MdRmyAM8PAY

Triple Fascination by 'the Listening'. I did a search for the song on youtube, and then google but couldn't find a video anywhere. apparently they are too obscure. but seriously, that song is my all time favourite song, the first 30 seconds are absolutely sublime

Neutral Milk Hotel slightly grungy, pretty funky, feelgood (musicwise at least).

Ben Folds!

American Analog Set: try this album (the one with The Postman). Maybe it's some good?

Adem! English Folk? Got some nicely music-box stuff. Grab an album and develop an opinion.

Vangelis: Ask the Mountains is good for atmospheric feel-good. New album: Olias of sunhillow. Song: albedo 0.39. Patrick Moraz: the story of I. More Prog Rock.

Set Fire to Flames, for their GYBE.

Newton Faulkner.

Not Music

The The, album: 45 rpm. Was a bit preachy and not that interesting musically.

Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly: teenaged vocals, and for Folkatronica it's pretty soft-rockish.

Noah and the Whale: Some good tracks, but a bit bouncy, and that one shitty preachy track turned me right off.
