Tips

  • Squash hits are done with a little chip by having the racquet face open. This allows the body to contribute to the hit and applies backspin. Forearm is like chopping with an axe. Example.
  • Forearm is kept high, to be ready.
  • Point your shoulder where you want the ball to go.
  • Kneel into a backhand; leave plenty of space for a natural swing.
  • Return to centre of court.
  • When returning a ball bouncing close from back wall, raise the racquet for power in the swing.

Drills

In all drills, start slow and increase pace as necessary.

Butterfly volley Standing in centre, hit ball high into alternating corners. Footwork; foot movement
2 Walls Standing in centre, forehand the ball to bounce from one side wall to the other. Return with a backhand then repeat. Keep racquet ready; watch ball; move feet.
Service box Try to make the ball bounce in the service box every time. Control; rhythm.
